State-of-the-Art Leg Ulcer Treatment that Cures Venous Disease with Venous Perforator SurgerySkin discoloration, thickening and ulcers of the lower legs are often caused by incompetent perforator veins in the calf. Douglas H Joyce, D.O., Triple Board Certified in Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery and Phlebology (Venous Disease), is one of the world’s most experienced perforator vein surgeons. He was one of the first surgeons in the world to realize the link between perforator incompetence and severe venous disease resulting in such debilitating conditions as chronic venous insufficiency. Under his care, formerly untreatable, long-term leg ulcers have been healed. Leg ulcer patients often come from all parts of the country seeking treatment by Dr. Joyce due to failure of vein treatment clinics to offer help for their chronic venous disease condition. Their story is almost always the same: they are told that nothing more can be done for their leg ulcers other than symptomatic treatment in wound care centers. Once they learn about Dr. Joyce's remarkable leg ulcer treatment results, they come from all over to the Joyce Vein & Aesthetic Institute in Punta Gorda, Florida to benefit from Dr. Joyce’s venous leg ulcer treatment expertise. Dr. Joyce is a leader in performing state-of-the art techniques for leg ulcer treatment caused by incompetent venous perforators.
Dr. Joyce began using the SEPS procedure to treat perforator disease in 1998. Over the next seven years, he refined the procedure and used it to treat over a thousand patients, one of the highest patient series in the world. The SEPS procedure uses a tiny camera or endoscope inserted through a small incision below the knee to visualize the compartment where the perforator veins are located. Tiny titanium clips are then placed around the malfunctioning veins, closing them and enabling healthy veins to take over. Approximately 94% of leg ulcers can be completely healed with SEPS. The SEPS procedure must be performed in the hospital under general anesthesia.
Always on the cutting edge, Dr. Joyce found a better solution for leg ulcer treatment and chronic venous insufficiency caused by incompetent venous perforators.
Over the past several years, Dr. Joyce has pioneered the use of radiofrequency and more recently, laser ablation for treating incompetent venous perforators in the office setting. These less invasive office procedures have proved to be highly effective and well tolerated. They have totally replaced the SEPS operation for the treatment of perforator disease. Laser perforator ablation takes less than 20 minutes of surgical time and most patients can go home with minimal restrictions.
Diagnosis and treatment of leg ulcers and chronic venous insufficiency caused by venous disease is covered by Medicare and most insurance providers. Call today for an initial leg ulcer treatment evaluation or complete the convenient vein treatment consultation request form below.

"I had bad circulation all the way down to my feet and ankles," says Roland Karpinski of Broward County. "As a result, I had developed a couple of wounds on each ankle and they wouldn't heal. I went to wound care centers, vascular surgeons, and other specialists for almost five years. Not one of those treatments succeeded in eliminating my painful leg ulcers. I had some vein stripping done, but the wounds just closed and opened, closed and opened...they would never heal...I went in for four skin grafts, but they didn't work either. The situation created a grueling routine...I went to a wound care center every Monday, they would treat the wound and wrap me back up again and the following week I'd have to come back and start all over. I always had these big four-layer casts on and they were terrible to deal with. I had to buy shoes that were a size too big so that I could get them over the casts. And I had to take medication." After suffering five years with what appears to be an incurable condition, Roland learned about Dr. Joyce. He drove nearly four hours to Port Charlotte on the recommendation of a vascular specialist in Broward County. Roland underwent the SEPS procedure on both legs. He had this to say: "Both legs are healed, and the quality of my skin is a lot better. It was a long way to go, but it came out perfect. Their whole staff does an excellent job. They're great!" Roland's wife added, "Dr. Joyce is very, very nice. I talked to the nurses at the hospital there and they have a lot of respect for him."
