Rosacea: A Poorly Understood and Often Under treated Problem Skin Disorder
 Back

Rosacea is a problem skin disorder affecting over 14 million Americans. Signs of a rosacea include facial redness in the areas of the cheeks, nose, forehead and/or chin. Pustules and papules that are may be confused with an acne breakout, may also be present. Rosacea occurs more often in fair skinned individuals and women. In fact, women are three times more likely to have rosacea than men. The initial rosacea outbreak is often around the age of 30. Rosacea generally has periods of remission and exacerbation of symptoms. Although rosacea has no known cure, appropriate rosacea treatment can effectively manage the symptoms.

Rosacea: A Significant Problem with Profound Psychological Effects

It is not uncommon for people suffering from the rosacea skin disorder to have associated psychological, social and occupational problems. Feelings of self consciousness about their appearance results in a tendency to avoid public places and withdraw socially. The negative consequences for social and professional relationships can be significant. Unfortunately, over 78% of Americans with rosacea do not know what it is, what can be done to treat it and most do not seek treatment.

Causes of Rosacea Outbreaks

Although there are some common precipitating factors for rosacea outbreaks, environmental and lifestyle triggers that produce an outbreak for one person will not necessarily be the same for another. Patients receiving rosacea treatment are encouraged to keep a log of possible triggers that are associated with their rosacea flare-ups. A survey of over 1,000 rosacea patients revealed some common triggers for rosacea. These included sun exposure, emotional stress, heat, wind, heavy exercise and alcohol use. Other precipitating factors included use of certain cosmetics and skincare products.

Rosacea Treatment is Not the Same as Acne Treatment

Many people with rosacea erroneously believe they have acne. Use of inappropriate skincare products and cosmetics to conceal the redness and other symptoms can actually make the condition worse. Use of acne treatment products for rosacea problem skin greatly reduces treatment effectiveness. These products can actually cause more harm than good.

Effective Rosacea Treatment

During periods of remission and outbreaks, rosacea treatment can effectively prevent and manage the symptoms. The initial step during treatment is to accurately diagnose the condition. This is accomplished during a professional skin consultation by a practitioner who is knowledgeable and skilled in the treatment of problem skin disorders. Once the diagnosis of rosacea is established, medical grade rosacea skincare products may be prescribed. Effective rosacea skincare products are available only by prescription. These protect and moisturize the skin as they reduce redness and sooth and calm the associated inflammatory response.

Life Changing Rosacea Treatment

With effective treatment, patients with rosacea can manage their rosacea symptoms and enhance the quality of their life. If you suffer from a rosacea skin disorder or know someone who does, please share this information and encourage them to seek help from a qualified and trained professional. This could very well be life changing.
